Utopia

Due to complete overpopulation and the greediness of humans, 96% of all of the forest has been destroyed and the land that was once used for various different buildings, neighborhoods, and mega cities become deserted. Due to the extreme amounts of deforestation, the natural balance of the weather around the world has completely changed. In the first year without most trees we saw drastic changes. The root of the problems right off the bat was the extreme air pollution, which killed most people nearly immediately. For the first few months, humans tried to continue their lives like normal, continuing to use our machines that produce mass amounts of greenhouse gasses. With the world now nearly having no trees to filter the air, take in the carbon dioxide and release oxygen the air becomes extremely poisonous to humans and animals alike. As months went on, rain became out of control and because there was nothing to keep the soil from washing away, flooding got really bad and canyons b

In Section Seven (42-47), we meet up again with Clark and there’s a chapter with Jeevan as well. Discuss the progression of the characters since we’ve seen them last. In this section, how do people find ways to survive both physically and mentally? 1. The characters have grown and changed tremendously. They are now moving forward with their lives and the way the world is the way it is and they are adjusted their lives to represent that. We get Clark's past and how he got to start the museum in the airport and what it meant to him. It is a sliver of the past keeping things alive in people's minds because he is able to teach about them and keep stories alive about different objects that we used to look at as meaningless but now are a representation of the past. Jeevan is now living in a community he has met a girl and she is now his wife, they have children, and people relay on him to be there. He acts as the doctor in the community because he is the closest one with any sort o

Blog Deep Dive into Station Eleven

CONTINUE READER’S JOURNAL FOR STATION ELEVEN, READING SECTIONS 5-6 (CHAPTERS 27-41) AND PULL TWO PASSAGES . “Always. Yes. When she traveled, she carried a sketchbook in her luggage, for the times when she was alone in hotel rooms at night. The focus of the work had gradually shifted. For a year’s Doctor 11 had been the hero of the narrative, but lately he began to annoy her, and she became more interested in the undersea. These people living out there lives in underwater, fallout shelters, clinging to the hope that the world they remembered could be restored. The undersea was limbo. She’s spent long hours sketching Lives played out in underground rooms.” (Mandel 213) I chose this passage because it shows who she had become as an author. The first character she had written about may have started out as her favorite character, later becoming one that she dreads and there has to be a reason. Whether it is because she has spent too much time with the character, or she is as a writer has

Reading Journal for Station Eleven

- I n section three, the novel flashes back to Arthur’s life before the outbreak of the Georgian Flu. What do we learn about him in these chapters? -We learned about where he grew up and a little bit about his childhood on the island. It seemed peaceful but it wasn't fulfilling his desires for life and he wanted so much more. He went to school in Toronto but didn't like it so he started acting classes instead. Tried to get into the acting world and struggled for a while. He met up with a girl from his hometown that his mother told him he should take to lunch cause it would be nice for her and good for him as well. They had a good lunch and then didn't talk again for many years. Arthur ended up landing a few bigger roles and ended up traveling to New York and LA for acting. He ended up booking something back in Toronto and Ended up hitting up that girl, Miranda, from his hometown. They hit it off and got married after a while. Three years into their marriage he met someone n

Week 13

In what ways do you think the motto "Survival is Insufficient" fits for the Traveling Troupe? They perform A Midsummer's Night Dream, a play that it turns out Shakespeare wrote during the great plague in Europe. Are there other parallels you see between the play and the story? In section two, the novel leaps ahead twenty years following the Georgian Flu. How has life changed for principal characters such as Kristen? In chapter twelve, the prophet makes his first appearance following the performance. Discuss his character.   I think that the motto is very fitting. From what I can tell about this group, they are strong willed and are trying to make the most out of the cards and lives that they have been handed and they want others to do the same. By providing entertainment for others they are given a sense of purpose in this messed up world they live in and are trying to enjoy life instead of just surviving. There are definitely parallels and although I do not fully remem

“You're not even listening to me. you never listen to me.” Jeevan knew this was a petty thing to say in the face of a probable  flu pandemic, but he couldn't resist. He plowed the cart into the others and dashed back into the store. ‘I can't believe you left me at the theater,” he said you just left me at the theater performing CPR on a dead actor” (Mandel 24) In this passage you can feel the frustration from Jeevan, but it also comes from a place of genuine care. Both emotions are so present and cause him to not be thinking rationally and just wants everything to be right and every one to be safe. I believe that the petty words came out of impulse from the intensity of the situation he has found himself in. Oftentimes, when I find myself in stressful situations, I do not think before I speak and I do not understand how impactful words can be. The message doesn’t always get across the way I want it to even if my intentions are pure and I think that this is similarly the w

Blog dive into dystopia

Why do you feel dystopian novels (which envision a future where the world has gone wrong) are a trending genre in fiction? What are some other dystopian books you have read? In this short article found on NPR, what are some of the reasons teenagers find the dystopian genre captivating and what do brain experts have to say about it? https://www.npr.org/sections/ed/2017/12/18/536007249/why-teens-find-the-end-of-the-world-so-appealing I think that dystopian is a trending genre because it is always engaging and normally has a plot that is action packed and easy to follow. Dystopian is the main genre that I gravitate towards. I have read Hunger Games, Maze Runner, The Selection, Lightlark, Uglies,The Darkest Minds, ect. Some reasons that experts say that teens gravitate towards dystopian books is that they can relate to the characters. The worlds are often falling apart and that is how most teens feel. It helps with their brain development and helps them feel their emotions and gives them a
